Robot QBO is introduced to a robot that looks exactly the same

In early December, we already informed of the special operations of QBO. QBO is a small robot that can recognize objects. When the robot sees something, he can using algorithms themselves ‘imagine’ what he sees. The researchers put the bar a bit higher in early December, however, and put QBO in the mirror . Could he even recognize himself? Yes! With a little help to succeed.

Me or you?
But – and it gets really interesting – what happens when QBO is faced with a fellow who looks just like him? How can he establish that he was not himself, but another look?

Light
Scientists came up with something on. QBO they learned that when he sees a different QBO take action. QBO need a light on its nose blink. When he sees that the other QBO at the same time flashing, he knows that he himself is. To prevent two robots happen exactly the same flashing pattern and assume wrongly conclude that they see themselves, the pattern is generated entirely involuntary. Thus the probability that the other person as they identify themselves very small.

Conversation
In the video below shows how QBO first himself and then identifies a fellow. When he encounters another robot, the two hold a short conversation.

The research is very interesting. The idea is that robots in the future a significant place in our society come to occupy. And it is important that the robots of themselves, their environment and their actions (and consequences) aware. But can an artificial brain to develop a consciousness? To answer this question, scientists continue to work hard.
