Slightly increased risk of ovarian tumor after IVF
Women undergoing IVF treatment are at an increased risk of a so-called borderline tumors of the ovary compared to women with fertility problems not IVF treatment. A borderline tumor is a tumor that lies at the interface of a benign and malignant tumors and in general it is treatable. Because this tumor type is rare in the general population, the probability that a woman after IVF a borderline ovarian tumor develops very small. The risk of developing malignant tumors of the ovary after IVF treatment is not markedly increased. The results are published in the medical journal Human Reproduction. The researchers had expected that a greater number of IVF treatments (more hormones and punctures) with higher risk would be associated, but this was not found in this study. Because the group of women studied had not yet reached the age where ovarian cancer is most common, and because the number of participating women underwent multiple IVF treatments was relatively small, to draw definite conclusions, further research is needed.
