Entirely certainly it not yet know them,  but science is fairly convinced a glimpse of the famous Higgs particle have seen.

CERN announced that a press conference this afternoon. The conference was announced some time ago and directly led to much speculation . CERN would have world news? CERN would have found the Higgs particle?

On the heels
That appears to be the case this afternoon, as reported CERN . But that is certainly no cause for disappointment. Because scientists do have something useful to say. They are the Higgs particle which is on the heels.

Standard
To understand what researchers mean by that, we first briefly at the history of the Higgs particle dives. Physicists have long ago established a theory: the standard model of particle physics. An important role in this standard is reserved for a theoretical particle which explains why all particles have mass. And that theoretical particle called – you guessed it – the Higgs particle.Problem is that this particle has never been found. And that particle must still be observed, we can confirm the theory. If the Higgs particle exists, researchers can then build. If it is not there, then it calls for a completely new theory. Because mass is very important: it determines how particles behave.

Search
CERN is therefore looking for some time for this particle. But that quest is complicated by the fact that we know little of the particle. But more and more places where the Higgs particle may occur, to exclude a discovery comes ever closer. CERN could already rule out that the particle between 114 and 115 GeV weighed. And between 135 and 136 GeV, we do not expect. But what then?

Well, there goes the press conference today. CERN has seen a radical which is around 125 GeV. It may be a glimpse of its Higgs. That sounds a little cautious and that the researchers. The glimpse is seen several times, but too little observed to speak of a ‘discovery’. This requires many more experiments are done. Chances are we in 2012 still really great news that the Higgs is found may bring. So be patient!
