The alarming rise in obesity is associated with many factors, an increase of non-nutritive sweeteners in many foods to reduce physical activity and nutritional knowledge.

Those who to the lack of physical activity as the main reason for increasing obesity show will probably start by pointing to modern entertainment. People prefer to stay on the couch for a movie or video game, rather they are going out to just enjoy getting out.

However advances in video games, especially the advent of motion-detection devices have led to systems like the Nintendo Wii, allowing gamers to actively participate in their virtual adventures using their entire body instead of just their thumbs.

But are these video game systems, a suitable substitute for actual exercise? A study recently published in the Journal of Exercise Physiology has studied this question.

The study compared the efficacy of the following three scenarios:

(Traditional) video game play

Boxing on the Nintendo Wii

treadmill walking with 4km/hour.

The participant group included both men and women with a mean age of 31.5 years. Heart rate, oxygen uptake and ratings of perceived exertion were taken at rest and during exercise sessions. Participants were also questioned what they thought of the activity. After all the more fun you will find something of the faster you do it again!
The results showed that all activities – even playing traditional video games, an increase in heart rate and oxygen uptake caused. However, in both categories, the Nintendo Wii boxing had the greatest increase. The average heart rate for participants in the Wii boxing game was 121.2 beats per minute, with almost 30 beats per minute more than the next highest activity, treadmill walking. In terms of oxygen uptake, which is linked to energy use, when boxing was 50% more oxygen than when walking on the treadmill.

The participants noted that they had most boxing effort. However, they evaluated the Wii as the best activity, with nearly 2 times as high score as walking on the treadmill.

And while the Wii boxing simulation would not produce a good workout as actual boxing, it is unlikely that the average person would have to choose between the two. The researchers considered this to note that the prevalence of sedentary video game play suggests that the substitution of a more interactive video game can be a very effective way to increase physical activity to be.

The high taste ratings also suggest that the Wii games would be less intimidating than exercising in a gym environment, and therefore suitable for beginners.

My internet connection is really bad, so it was a bit hard to make the video. since I lost the connection =/ Some of the opponents was maybe not the best, and I’ll work on it in my next Online videos. I’ll try to face some harder opponents =)

If I go for the win, I useally pass the ball a lot more. But this video was just about fun! It’s really funny dribbling your opponents. The final result doesn’t matter, if the match was fun, in my opinion =)

If you think I faced some bad opponents, or I played bad, or I should use a other team, then don’t come with some shitty comments. I’ll try to improve it in my next Online videos =)

Children spend an average of nearly two hours a day outdoors, more than half the time played on squares and sidewalks, sometimes called informal play. In a real playground, formal play, less time is spent, but children do more exercise. The Dutch research organization TNO in ten districts studied how the physical activity of children of primary school age is related to the layout of the neighborhood. Using GPS and accelerometers in 100 children was also evident at the locations they move. In areas where in 2008 fewer intersections, and where fewer speeding cars / motorcycles driving around than in 2004, more children were playing outside. The distance to services for children is important. At a distance of 350 meters between home and school walked or biked all children to school. speed reduction measures such as introduction of one way streets, speed bumps and car-free zones around schools, the safety and accessibility of public spaces for youth increase. RIP advises city planners and municipal officials in order to (re) organization of neighborhoods especially more attention to: • Reducing the speed of cars in urban areas. • Providing good and safe walking and bicycle connections to schools and sports and play areas.
