Vitamin Supplements: Vitamin deficiencies only
It makes little sense, it may even be harmful, for vitamin supplements and additional minerals such as iron or copper to swallow, if you do not really need. This appears from an article in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. The researchers studied the vitamin and mineral usage of 38,000 women aged 61 years averaged over a period of 20 years. It showed that women who took supplements were not healthier but instead more likely to die prematurely. The women who swallowed extra iron tablets, increased the likelihood that they would die earlier by almost 4% percent. The higher the dose of iron was, the higher the chance of premature death. For other supplements was the mortality risk compared with women who took no supplements are also higher: - multivitamins: + 2.4% - Vitamin B6: + 4.1% - Folic acid: + 5.9% - Magnesium: + 3.6% - Zinc: + 3% - copper + 18% Single calcium supplements appeared to reduce the risk of mortality (- 3.8%). The scientists emphasize that the impossible to say with certainty that only the vitamins were responsible for the increased mortality risk. The health situation of women may have played a role. Yet they say their results indicate that simply swallowing supplements unwise. Only if there is a medical reason for it, especially a vitamin or mineral deficiency, supplements are justified
