Vitamins can prevent glaucoma
Diet affects whether or not getting the eye disease glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness. People who consume plenty of vitamins A and B1, are less likely to have the eye disease. According to research at the Erasmus Medical Centre inRotterdam. How is it that food can affect the disease is not yet known. In glaucoma, there is often a high eye pressure or reduced blood flow to the optic nerve. This can damage the nerve fibers occurs. Foods with high vitamin A are liver, fish and dairy products. Vitamin B1 is in cereal. Magnesium-rich foods such as soybeans, shellfish and shrimp turn increase the chance of developing glaucoma. Magnesium may have affected the blood supply to the optic nerve. A striking finding is that overweight women have a higher eye pressure, but still seem to have a smaller chance to get this eye disease. Each additional point on the body mass index (BMI) gives seven percent lower risk of developing glaucoma. In men, there is no link between BMI and glaucoma. Probably this has to do with the method used for the eye to measure eye pressure. This is for overweight people exerted pressure on the chest which in particular the pressure is higher in women than it seems in reality.
