The waist circumference appears to be a good predictor of the risks that elderly are dying from heart disease. According to research commissioned by the Dutch RIVM
Older people with a waist circumference of 123 cm (men) or 105 cm (women) are twice as likely to die from heart disease than those with an average waist circumference.The average waist circumference is 94 inches for men and women 80 inches. The survey was conducted among more than 58,000 65-75 year olds. In addition to waist circumference remains the body mass index of importance. The study shows that older people are underweight (BMI <20 kg/m2) twice as likely to die prematurely.
